RESEARCH

Qianyu’s current research explores the potential of the free-bass accordion in nuevo tango performance and composition. The accordion has evolved considerably over the last few decades in terms of instrument build and sound. This significant development has raised the status of the accordion in the classical music establishment. By contrast, the free-bass accordion is still largely neglected in tango music.

Qianyu is researching to argue that, not only does the free-bass accordion have the ability to deliver the characteristics of tango, but its versatility can also take tango in new directions. Qianyu’s research is supervised by Professor Sir Barry Ife, Professor Steve Potter, and Mr. John Turville.
